It's our job as therapists to inspire...not require

Therapists, whether we are OT, PT, or SLP...never force or require our patients or clients to do anything - but sometimes we have to provide a little extra encouragement, motivation, and inspiration; and I think we can all agree this is true for almost any population or setting.

This holds true especially in my practice as an Early Interventionist. As I’m sure you know, there is just no “requiring” a baby or toddler to do anything - they usually have their own little agenda! But we use our unique skills to inspire our little ones to play with us as we help work towards their goals.

✨We use what’s in the environment
✨We encourage creativity and have fun
✨We incorporate treatment into natural, everyday routines
✨We follow our client’s lead
✨We use therapeutic use of self and focus on connection
✨We build rapport and cultivate a relationship
✨We make it meaningful and occupation-based, always.

One of the beautiful things about our collective rehab professions is that although many people never expect to be in a position to need us, they are almost always grateful to have us and I think this is a huge reason why. We don’t require them to do anything, but they end up inspired to do everything 🙌🏾
